The two vehicles that were anti-climatically towed away by federal agents from then-D.C. Councilman Harry Thomas Jr.’s home in December are officially in the hands of the government.
A filing in federal court last week states that Thomas’ 2008 Victory motorcycle and 2008 Chevy Tahoe sport-utility vehicle had been forfeited to the United States by order of the court. Thomas, who is now serving a three-year, two-month sentence in an Alabama federal prison, admitted he purchased those vehicles using money he stole from the city government.
Ally Financial Inc., which is still owed money by Thomas for the Tahoe, is getting the proceeds of the sale on that SUV, minus the sales tax and storage fees to the government.
No word on when the government will actually sell the vehicles.
Thomas pleaded guilty in federal court in January to stealing $353,500 in funds meant for city youth sports. According to the charging document, Thomas used the money for cars, expensive clothes and golf trips. He spent a small portion of the money on the children for whom all the money was designated.
At his sentencing in May, Thomas apologized, admitting he’d felt entitled to the extra money after years of public service.
