Anne Boone-Simanski: A 49ers gold rush

Hundreds of people galloped their way into Martin’s West recently, donning cowboy attire to support the 49th annual Mildred Mindell Cancer Foundation’s fundraiser. Honorees included Drs. Robert K. Brookland, Paul A. Celano and Francis Grumbine from The Greater Baltimore Medical Center’s Gynecological Oncology Service.

Prior to strapping on the feed bag, many of the attendees moseyed around a bonanza of silent-auction items. A life-size cutout of John Wayne, a Conestoga wagon and Western movies set the perfect tone for the evening’s festivities. Tireless MMCF board member and event Chairwoman Eileen Chiat was very busy making sure this celebration of the late Mildred Mindell’s life would once again be the talk of the town.

Auction chair Jewel Martin and her daughter Sharon were talking up the “Comfort Pillow” project, headed by Nancy Goldberg, who teaches volunteers how to create the squares that make up the front of the pillows. These pillows are given to women who have undergone a mastectomy in an effort to show support during their difficult time. Martin also said that committee members have been “selling the heck” out of their “Circle of Hope” bracelets.

I was fortunate enough to share space at the chuck wagon with GBMC’s director of development, Janet Farr, Acclaimed Promotional Specialties VP Jerry Chiat, and Carol Ronis of CFR-Consulting Group. MMCF co-Presidents Robin Katcoff and Mary Zell Lipnick said they were thrilled to honor Drs. Brookland, Celano and Grumbine, who are dedicated to the treatment of gynecologic cancers.

Once auctioneer Bill Fox started the bidding, WBAL’s “Detour” Dave Sandler and his wife, Jody, an officer for MMCF, scouted the room pointing out the winners. Live auction items included a pair of ice skates autographed by Kimmie Meissner.

WELCOME TO THE 60s

Baltimore filmmaker John Waters recently celebrated the Big 6-0, joining the ranks of a certain publisher I know.
