President Trump will not visit Houston during his trip to Texas on Tuesday, but will instead remain closer to the area where Hurricane Harvey hit land, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday.
“The place he will be going to will not be Houston, so [he] will not be getting into harm’s way or interrupting the evacuations or emergency response in the Houston area,” Abbott, a Republican, told CBS. “He most likely will be going closer to where the hurricane hit land.”
The White House announced Saturday that Trump will be traveling to Texas. However, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders didn’t provide details on the areas the president is scheduled to visit.
Hurricane Harvey made landfall in southeastern Texas on Friday and Saturday, leading to catastrophic flooding in parts of Harris County, which includes Houston.
At least five people have died and federal officials expect more than 30,000 people to seek temporary shelter.
Trump, who spent the weekend at Camp David, frequently tweeted his praise for the emergency responders and federal agencies in their efforts to aid storm victims.
