Coburn: ‘Obvious’ Trump will be the nominee

Former Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn thinks there is no stopping Donald Trump now.

“I think he’s going to be the nominee, it seems obvious to me at this time,” Coburn told CNN Wednesday morning. “It’s going to be pretty hard to stop him.”

Coburn endorsed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s presidential bid, and when asked whether Trump has Coburn’s vote, the former senator responded, “not yet.”

Coburn also praised Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s choice of Carly Fiorina as his running mate, but was less laudatory about Cruz, and indicated that Cruz’s strained relationship with Republican leaders in Washington may hurt him.

“Ted has done everything he’s told the people of Texas he would do. It’s how he does it, how he stepped on toes is his problem,” Coburn said. “Ted’s a nice guy, I don’t have any personal problems with Ted, but strategies and tactics matter, and how you get to where you want to get to matters.”

Coburn sounded despondent that Rubio’s bid failed and said, “I assure you, Marco would have won” in a general election.

Coburn sounded more open to Trump on Thursday than he has been in the past. The former senator’s comments were a departure from when he said Trump needed to be stopped, and when Coburn’s name was floated as a possible third-party candidate for president.
