MontCo firefighters, police climb stairs to remember 9-11 victims

To honor the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, police officers and firefighters in Montgomery County will climb 110 flights of stairs while wearing more than 60 pounds of firefighting equipment.

The event is part of a national effort to memorialize the 343 public safety officials who died in the World Trade Center, according to county spokeswoman Karen Falcon. It is scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the North Bethesda Market in White Flint, at 11418 Rockville Pike.

Since Montgomery County doesn’t have a building that has 110 stories — the new North Bethesda Market building is the tallest — participants will climb the building’s stairs four times, adding an additional 10 stories at the end.

The event also serves as a fundraiser for the Philadelphia-based Burn Foundation, which works to fight burn and fire injuries.

The first 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb was held in 2005 in Denver to support the Naitonal Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
