Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer criticized outgoing Education Secretary Betsy DeVos a day after posting a call for unity.
“We must always remember that we are Americans first, and we are not one another’s enemy,” Whitmer said in a joint statement with former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday after political violence on Capitol Hill.
The statement called on the public to “unify as one nation” and “pray for peace, calm, and healing.”

The next day, Whitmer posted an old photo of herself wearing a T-shirt apologizing to the country for DeVos, who hails from Michigan, on behalf of all Michiganders. The picture’s caption simply contained an emoji of a hand waving goodbye.

Whitmer’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner.
DeVos resigned from her position as education secretary on Thursday, citing Trump’s rhetoric leading up to the deadly Capitol Hill clash between Trump supporters and Capitol Police.
