Key panel examining whether IRS ‘properly auditing’ Trump

The House Ways and Means Committee is looking into whether the Internal Revenue Service is “properly” auditing President Trump, according to a Democrat on the panel.

Since the 2016 campaign, Trump has resisted calls to release his tax returns, citing an ongoing audit.

During an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Dan Kildee, D-Mich., said the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee has a right to order a tax return if it is related to a topic of deliberation.

“We are looking very carefully right now as to whether or not the IRS is properly auditing and enforcing tax law on the president of the United States. And we’re considering legislative changes toward that end. It is not up to President Trump,” Kildee said.

Richard Neal, the Democratic chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, submitted his long-awaited request for Trump’s tax returns on Wednesday. The Massachusetts representative requested six years’ worth of Trump’s personal and business tax returns, setting up a potential major legal conflict with the administration.

Trump reacted to the news of Neal’s request by repeating that he is under audit and that “until such time as I’m not under audit, I would not be inclined to” cooperate with the request.

In his letter to the IRS, Neal asked the tax collection agency to clarify whether Trump was under audit for the years requested, which date from 2013 through 2018.
