State: No Olympic travel advice after Brazil arrests 10 terror plotters

The State Department said Thursday it has no plans to issue any sort of travel warning related to Brazil, even after authorities there arrested 10 people linked to possible terrorism plots.

“There’s been no changes to any sort of travel recommendations with respect to the Olympics,” said State Department spokesman John Kirby.

“We believe that Brazilian authorities are on top of this,” he said. “I think today’s arrest is an indicator of the degree to which they take this very seriously.”

“Again, we’re confident that they’re going to be able to hold and to secure a safe environment for the Olympic games,” Kirby added.

Brazilian police arrested 10 people they believed to be planning acts of terrorism sometime during the summer Olympics, which start Aug. 5 in Rio de Janeiro.

“Obviously, we’re … gonna stay vigilant here,” he added. “It would be irresponsible not to continue to look at things very, very carefully, given that it is such a widely attended public series of events.”
