Super Bowl champion arrested after 100-plus mph chase

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Lerentee McCray was arrested Sunday after a high-speed police chase that surpassed speeds of over 100 mph.

Police described the 31-year-old Super Bowl champion as erratic and in an “altered mental status” before his arrest, according to Boston 25.

McCray is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, the report noted.

The incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. when a police officer attempted to pull over a Dodge Ram speeding in Lake County, Florida, according to the police report.

The driver, McCray, did not pull over and made a “hand gesture using his middle finger,” according to the report. A high-speed chase ensued, and McCray reportedly began swerving.

He pulled into a 7-Eleven gas station, where a separate traffic stop was taking place, fist-bumped an officer he knew, and then attempted to buy the officer some gas, police said.

When the officer told McCray he didn’t need to purchase the gas, the defensive end grabbed the officer’s wrist and “squeezed forcefully,” the police report read.

McCray was told to return to his vehicle where he removed a child-sized bicycle and talked “in circles.” He then laid down on the ground “as if he wanted to be handcuffed,” according to the police report.

The defensive end was taken into custody “due to his erratic behavior” and taken to a local hospital. Marijuana and a shotgun were found in his truck, police said.

McCray was released from jail after posting a $5,000 bond, and he is set to appear in court on Feb. 14. The Jaguars are “aware of the situation and “gathering more information,” according to a team statement.
