Top GOP donor unveils gun control group during March for Our Lives protest

A top Republican donor unveiled a center-right gun control advocacy group during the March for Our Lives rally in hopes of persuading Congress to pass comprehensive legislation to regulate guns.

Al Hoffman Jr., a Florida businessman who served as ambassador to Portugal under former President George W. Bush, initiated the group, Americans for Gun Safety Now, on Saturday and already has the support of GOP donors and lawmakers, including Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla.

“The federal government better pass legislation that is readily available right now… and get it done now, before November,” Hoffman told TIME. “If they don’t do this, my guess is that they will lose big in November.”

The group is urging Congress to protect and support Second Amendment rights while expanding background checks, raising the purchasing age to 21 for all guns, and limiting high capacity magazines.

Hoffman made national headlines last month after the deadly mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. after saying he refuses to donate to politicians who won’t support a ban on assault weapons.

The new group will be represented by Hoffman at the March for Our Lives gun control demonstration on Saturday in Washington, D.C.
