Tourist jumps hundreds of feet to his death from Grand Canyon Skywalk

Colorado authorities are searching for the body of a man that climbed over a safety barrier and jumped to his death at the Grand Canyon Skywalk.

The skywalk is a horseshoe-shaped walkway that juts out roughly 70 feet over the Grand Canyon. The walkway is located on the Hualapai reservation outside Grand Canyon National Park.

The man, a 28-year-old tourist, jumped off the edge of the Skywalk around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Associated Press. Officials launched a recovery mission on Sunday morning to find the man’s body. Safety signs around the Skywalk warn tourists to be careful, as a tumble over the edge would likely result in a 500- to 800-foot drop.

“In the aftermath of Saturday’s tragic suicide, our hearts are with everyone impacted: The family of the man who took his own life, our guests, and the Grand Canyon West employees on duty Saturday,” Grand Canyon West spokesman David Leibowitz said in a statement.

Park officials will review safety policies in the wake of the tragedy.

“Moving forward, we will explore whether new policies and more security in addition to our extensive Skywalk safety barriers might be used to make Grand Canyon West even safer than it is today,” Leibowitz said. “Having said that, nearly 10 million guests have visited Grand Canyon West since 2007 and this is the first such incident involving Skywalk in all that time.”
