Jewish group condemns MTG for comparing Biden to Hitler

The American Jewish Committee condemned a tweet from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) that compared President Joe Biden to Adolf Hitler and called on Republican leadership to do so as well.

Greene tweeted a clip of Biden’s speech from Philadelphia on Thursday, except the video was heavily manipulated to give Biden a Hitler mustache and superimpose a Nazi insignia in the background. The sound was replaced with audio from one of Hitler’s speeches.

Conservatives panned Biden’s speech for castigating MAGA Republicans as “destroying American democracy,” and commentators mocked the sinister optics of a blood-red backdrop flanked by Marines.

“[Greene] continues to trivialize the terror of the Nazis and use Holocaust imagery for political gain,” the Jewish group said in a statement. “This doctored video is vile, offensive, and completely unbecoming for a member of Congress. House Republican leaders must condemn her conduct.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre included Greene in a list of five Republican politicians who she said have lobbed “attacks on our core values as a country.” Biden made a similar statement in his speech about how Trump supporters are harmful to the country.

“MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution. They do not believe in the rule of law. … MAGA Republicans are destroying American democracy,” Biden said.

Greene has a history of stirring controversy. The House voted largely along party lines to boot Greene from her committees in February 2021, shortly after she took office. The lawmaker has been scrutinized for social media posts made prior to her election that expressed support for the QAnon conspiracy theory and executing Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

Last year, the firebrand conservative’s repeated comments comparing coronavirus restrictions to the Holocaust were met with bipartisan condemnation, with Jewish groups and members of the House GOP conference, including Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA), rebuking her remarks likening vaccine passports to Nazis forcing Jewish people to wear gold stars.

Greene later apologized for her comments following a visit to the Holocaust Museum on the National Mall in June 2021 after being encouraged to go by her GOP colleagues.
