Virginia Railway Express is considering a ban on outdoor smoking along its station platforms.
Second-hand smoke is a continual complaint by riders, so the commuter train service’s board decided to consider a ban on the smoking of pipes, cigarettes, cigars or other substances while at any outdoor VRE facility. Riders currently aren’t allowed to smoke inside the trains or inside the stations.
Other transit agencies such as Metro do not allow smoking at outdoor platforms. Amtrak doesn’t generally allow it either.
But before making any changes, VRE is seeking rider input. Riders can submit comments via email at [email protected] or by fax to 703-684-1313 until July 20, the service said Tuesday.
The operations board will consider the ban in August.
