Trump says he’d sign abortion coverage ban

President Trump would sign legislation making its way through the House that would ban Obamacare plans from covering abortions, the White House said in a statement Tuesday.

The House plans to pass the measure later in the day. It would prohibit private plans sold on the marketplaces from offering abortion services as part of the benefits. Under current law, Obamacare plans can cover abortions but they must be paid for with a separate fee paid by consumers.

“This bill would continue to prohibit the federal government from paying for affected procedures with the taxes of Americans who find abortion morally or religiously objectionable,” the White House statement said.

The bill, which the House passed two years ago, is unlikely to become law because Senate Democrats would almost certainly block it. Under Senate rules, 60 votes are needed to end debate on a bill and send it to the floor for a vote, which means Republicans would need at least eight Democratic votes.
