Suspect in 18-year-old murders back in Fairfax County

A man on California’s death row has been returned to Northern Virginia to face capital murder charges in Arlington and Fairfax counties.

Alfredo R. Prieto, 40, was linked by DNA evidence to the 1988 killings of Rachel Raver and Warren Fulton, both 22, whose bodies were found in a Reston field, officials say.

Fairfax County Cold Case detectives entered untested DNA into the Virginia DNA database in 2000 and a match was made to the 1988 slaying of Veronica Lynn Jefferson, 24, which was being investigated by Arlington County Cold Case detectives.

Last summer, the DNA was matched to Prieto, an inmate on death row in California for the rape and fatal shooting of a 15-year-old girl.

Prieto was indicted in the Fairfax and Arlington murders in 2005 on charges of murder, rape, grand larceny and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
