Sheriff?s deputy charged with stealing signs

Howard County Sheriff Chuck Cave?s chief deputy has been charged with stealing Cave?s challenger?s campaign signs, according to Howard County police.

The wife of challenger Jim Fitzgerald, the president of the county police union, has filed a charge of theft against Maj. Scott Mergenthaler, after she observed him “stealing” her husband?s campaign signs posted in Jessup, Fitzgerald said.

At about 2 p.m. Monday, Fitzgerald?s wife, Lorraine, observed Mergenthaler removing the campaign signs from the side of Md. 175. She then went to the court commissioner and filed the charge against him, Fitzgerald said.

Mergenthaler could not be reached for comment.
