Harford teen steals family?s SUV, fires at police

An “emotionally distressed” Forest Hill 16-year-old took his family?s SUV Friday morning, led deputies on a chase to Bel Air and fired gunshots at authorities before rolling the vehicle, police said.

The Sheriff?s Office received a call at about 7 a.m. Friday that an “emotionally distressed” boy had taken the SUV, and they found the teenager about an hour later on Route 1 near the Hickory Bypass, said Sgt. David Betz, spokesman for the Sheriff?s Office.

“One of our deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the vehicle pulled over. At that point, the deputy heard at least one shot fired,” Betz said. “A small chase in ensued.”

Police did not fire any shots, Betz said.

They are unsure whether the teenager had a driver?s license and believe he may have taken the gun from another family member, Betz said.

The teenager is expected to be charged with attempted murder and assault on a police officer.
