NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — There’s damage in Newport from superstorm Sandy, but many of the city’s best-known tourist attractions are open.
Mansions including The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House, Rosecliff and Chateau-sur-Mer were open for tours Tuesday. The International Tennis Hall of Fame is also open, as is Fort Adams.
Several business owners at Bowen’s Wharf, which has about 40 retails shops, restaurants and galleries, reported up to two feet of water inside their stores. Michelle Gagne, a spokeswoman for the wharf, says they’re cleaning up on Tuesday.
Newport Police say there was significant debris on Ocean Drive. Once it’s cleaned up, they’ll reopen the road.
At Easton’s Beach, water pushed sand through the rotunda and bathing houses, causing what police say is extensive damage.
