Agricultural commodities are finishing higher on worries that hot summer weather will shrink crop yields.
The price of corn rose more than 5 percent Tuesday. Soybeans and wheat both rose more than 3 percent. Dry weather over the weekend in states like Iowa and Illinois, and forecasts for more of the same, raised concerns that farmers won’t be able to grow as many crops as previously expected.
Prices for coffee, orange juice, cotton and sugar also rose.
The price of copper rose, which usually means investors are optimistic about manufacturing. But palladium and platinum, which are also industrial metals, fell.
Oil prices were mixed. Crude rose in New York but fell in London.
