Progressive group backs Clinton: We won’t ‘agree with every decision’ she makes

A leading progressive organization that “threw everything” into supporting Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary joined the socialist senator on Tuesday in his endorsement of Hillary Clinton.

“Our members voted overwhelming to endorse Bernie Sanders and then threw everything they could into his race, because they knew the stakes of this election,” Charles Chamberlain, president of Democracy for America, said in a statement.

“Donald Trump won’t just cement the corrosive trends of income inequality, structural racism, and out-of-control money in politics into the national agenda, he’ll double down on them and add a little unrepentant bigotry on the side,” Chamberlain continued. “Which is why, today, Democracy for America is continuing to stand with Bernie Sanders by joining him in formally endorsing Hillary Clinton for President.”

The group said its decision to endorse Clinton was based not on its previous commitment to supporting the Democratic nominee but “because she gives our country the opportunity to smash one of its last great glass ceilings and will be the partner we need in the White House to realize the agenda that Bernie Sanders’ political revolution fought for in the primaries.”

“As with any Democratic president, DFA is not going to agree with every decision Hillary Clinton makes and, when our members think she’s wrong, we won’t shy away from making sure their voices are heard,” Chamberlain cautioned.

Sanders took the stage with Clinton in Portsmouth, N.H., on Tuesday for their first joint appearance together since the primary concluded.

“Secretary Clinton has won the Democratic nominating process, and I congratulate her for that. She will be the Democratic nominee for president and I intend to do everything I can to make certain she will be the next president of the United States,” the Vermont senator told the crowd.
