Endangered DCCC chairman says Biden gets a ‘bum rap’ as party fights to keep control of Congress

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) defended President Joe Biden, despite Maloney being at risk of losing his seat in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Maloney embraced the unpopular president, saying he gets a “bum rap” as many vulnerable Democrats have sought to distance themselves from the party leader.

“I think the president gets a bum rap. By the way, he’s been a leader on public safety his whole career,” Maloney said while speaking with Chuck Todd on NBC‘s Meet the Press Sunday.

Maloney then emphasized Biden’s work on infrastructure, healthcare, and gun legislation as reasons he believes the president has been a success.

“I think he’s working through the damage of the Trump years and the pandemic, and he’s not getting enough credit for it. Now, we’ve got more to do, and he’ll be the first one to tell you that,” Maloney said.

When pressed by Todd on whether Maloney believes the Democrats’ struggles ahead of the midterm elections were due to messaging rather than failures by the party in power, the congressman deflected by saying Democrats were “responsible adults” compared to Republicans.
