County names head of division of agriculture

John Sullivan has been named Harford?s deputy chief of staff and will lead the state?s first county-level division of agriculture.

Sullivan had served as agricultural coordinator before being tapped for the new position by County Executive David Craig.

“Our hope is to exhibit to the County Council and the county executive our accomplishments and then have them provide continued support,” Sullivan said.

But Councilman Dion Guthrie said he doubted Sullivan would focus only on agriculture because the deputy chief of staff would be bogged down with other responsibilities.

Guthrie thought the title should be “deputy chief of staff of agriculture” to make sure Sullivan is dedicated to agriculture.

The job description is more important than the title, though, said Aaron Tomarchio, Craig?s chief of staff.

Sullivan will “market, promote and be a voice for the agricultural community interfacing with county government,” he said.

Sullivan will likely focus first on providing central areas to house horses and helping farmers sell more produce.

“Coming out of the county executive?s office, I will be able to more easily cross reference lines and get answers to farmers? problems,” Sullivan said. “It?s less hoops to jump through.”
