Idaho student murders: Bryan Kohberger indicted in killing of four Idaho students

A grand jury indicted Bryan Kohberger for the murder of four University of Idaho students on Wednesday.

Kohberger, 28, a criminology graduate student from Washington State University, was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary in the Nov. 13 deaths of Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21.

The multi-count indictment, which includes murder, from the Latah County grand jury has a number of ramifications on the case. Originally, a preliminary hearing was set for late June so Kohberger’s defense lawyers and prosecutors could present evidence and even witnesses.

Now, the defense can no longer attack the evidence used to arrest Kohberger, and the two surviving housemates and other witnesses will not be cross-examined prior to a trial, Fox News reported.

His new arraignment is scheduled for May 22 at 9 a.m.

Kohberger was arrested in late December following a monthslong investigation by state and federal law enforcement agencies that used his white Hyundai Elantra vehicle and evidence found in his car and home to connect him to the murders.

Legal counsel for Bethany Funke, one of the two surviving roommates of the victims, fought a subpoena that is compelling her to testify at the original hearing in June. Eventually, Funke agreed to an interview with Kohberger’s legal counsel in Reno, Nevada, where she is from. It is unclear now if Funke will appear at the newly scheduled arraignment.
