Obamacare insurance prices are rising an average of 22 percent nationally next year, but enrollees will face varying rate hikes depending on their state.
Insurers in some states had underpriced their products in the first few years of the marketplaces set up under President Obama’s healthcare law and now are trying to make up for their losses with big cost increases. Other insurers had done a better job projecting their expenses and are now raising prices by less (or lowering prices, in a few cases).
Here are the states with the biggest and smallest Obamacare rate changes. The estimates are based on premium costs for a 27-year-old buying the second-lowest-cost silver plan.
Biggest rate hikes
1. Arizona: 116 percent
2. Oklahoma: 69 percent
3. Tennessee: 63 percent
4. Minnesota: 59 percent
5. Alabama: 58 percent
Smallest rate changes
1. Massachusetts and Indiana: -3 percent
2. Ohio, New Hampshire, Arkansas: 2 percent
3. New Jersey: 5 percent
4. Nevada: 6 percent
5. North Dakota, Michigan, California: 7 percent
