End to construction means I-95 sucks just a little bit less

After more than three painful years of mind-numbing traffic delays along Interstate 95 between Route 123 and the Fairfax County Parkway, the construction is finally over.

Take it in: The construction is finally over.

On Thursday, local officials joined Virginia Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton to dedicate the long-awaited fourth lanes in each direction on the interstate, paving the way for an end to what has been one of the region’s ugliest bottlenecks.

The six-mile stretch carries about 230,000 vehicles per day, and the new lanes are expected to save drivers 10-20 minutes at peak drive times. The project has cost about $122 million since its start in March 2008.

As you zip over the Occoquan River Bridge, take a second (only a second, please — safety first!) to appreciate the view — a little bit lovelier without the construction equipment.
