Donald Trump said the Republican National Convention was “one of the best ever” and a great sign of unity in the GOP.
Speaking in Cleveland the morning after he accepted his party’s nomination, the Republican presidential nominee said he was pleased with how the convention went and how the party united behind him.
“This was probably one of the most peaceful, one of the most beautiful, one of the most love-filled conventions in the history of conventions,” Trump said. “When they talk about unity, that was unity. That was amazing.”
The convention opened Monday with a floor fight over the convention rules, which ended up being the final gasp of anti-Trump Republicans. The week was marked by a number of controversies, including the inclusion of parts of Michelle Obama’s 2008 Democratic National Convention speech in Melania Trump’s speech.
Trump alluded to another headline-grabbing incident from the convention during his post-convention speech, when Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, refused to endorse him in his speech on Wednesday. Cruz was subsequently booed off the stage.
“The party has just come together and the few people who aren’t there, it’s OK,” Trump said, adding that he’s an outsider who didn’t expect to get the support of the entire party.
Trump added that he was grateful for the police protection outside the convention hall and the hard work of all the carpenters and technicians who helped build the set.
