Romney boosts David French as third-party candidate

Mitt Romney admitted late Tuesday he is open to the idea of attorney David French mounting a third-party presidential run.

The former 2012 GOP nominee tweeted a subtle showing of support. Romney’s interest in backing the conservative author would serve his foundational interest of blocking Donald Trump from the White House in November.

Romney’s tweet came only hours after Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol first floated the idea in his weekly column.

French has not publicly stated whether he would consider running, but tweeted out a message of thanks to his supporters, just minutes after Romney praised the idea.

French and the National Review have railed against Trump, encouraging the #NeverTrump movement since the beginning of the year.
