Live racing to continue in Maryland

Live horse racing will continue in Maryland through the Preakness — the second leg of the Triple Crown and the state’s most lucrative race — Gov. Martin O’Malley announced Wednesday.

“I am pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached… that will allow for a full season of racing in 2011,” O’Malley said. He said the owners of Maryland’s Laurel Park and Pimlico tracks have agreed on a racing schedule with the state’s horse breeders and owners, after months of gridlock between the parties.

The settlement, which will allow for 146 days of live racing in 2011, will be sent to the Maryland Racing Commission for approval Wednesday afternoon, according to O’Malley.
