One Houston police officer dead and another wounded after shooting at apartment complex

One Houston police officer is dead and another was wounded after they were shot at an apartment complex on Tuesday.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said Sgt. Harold Preston, a 41-year veteran of the department, was shot multiple times, including in the head, shoulder, as well as the spine, and later died from his wounds. He was able to see his mother in the hospital before he died, Acevedo added, according to ABC13.

The other officer, Courtney Waller, was shot in the arm. He’s expected to survive.

The shooting happened Tuesday morning near the route to 2600 Holly Hall, south of the Texas Medical Center. Acevedo said the officers were dispatched to respond to a domestic abuse situation.

The suspect, identified as 51-year-old Elmer Manzano, was apprehended after a SWAT team arrived and surrounded the apartment where Manzano’s estranged wife said she was moving out when the shooting took place.

“HPD Sgt Harold Preston was murdered in cold blood today. He served Houston honorably for 41 years, was weeks from retirement, he did not deserve this. Please keep his family and all of our officers in your thoughts/prayers as we attempt to make sense of any of this. RIP Brother,” Houston Police Officers Union President Joe Gamaldi tweeted.
