President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed problems in Ukraine and Syria, as well as the fight against terrorism and cybersecurity issues, according to Russian state-run media.
“We’ve had a very long discussion with the U.S. president. Many issues accrued, including Ukraine, Syria and other problems, as well as some bilateral issues,” Putin told reporters after his more than two-hour meeting with Trump, according to RT.
Putin also said he and Trump discussed “the issues of fighting terrorism and cybersecurity,” Russian-run Sputnik New reported.
Putin did not mention whether Trump brought up Russia’s election meddling during their talk, which was scheduled to run just 30 minutes.
The two reportedly struck a ceasefire covering southeast Syria, although neither the White House nor the Kremlin immediately provided details about what the agreement would look like.
Tensions between the U.S. and Russia over Syria have risen steadily since Trump took office.
In April, Trump authorized a missile strike against a Syrian air base that Russian forces also use in response to the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons on civilians.
Last month, Trump authorized the U.S. to shoot down a Syrian government plane for the first time. Russia then warned the U.S. it would shoot down any American or coalition plane that wandered west of the Euphrates River in an escalation of the stand-off over Syria.
