House Majority Whip Steve Scalise went into surgery for the third time Thursday morning after he was wounded in a shooting at the Republican baseball team’s practice in Alexandria, Va.
Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said the Louisiana Republican remained in critical condition, and they began a third operation, according to Politico.
Scalise was transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center after a gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson, opened fire on a group of Republican lawmakers practicing for the annual congressional baseball game.
The hospital said in a statement Wednesday night Scalise suffered a single rifle shot to his left hip. The bullet fractured bones and injured internal organs, and the Louisiana Republican suffered severe bleeding. Doctors said he would require additional surgeries.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Scalise went into surgery immediately and had an additional operation to stop bleeding.
Three others, Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner, congressional aide Zack Barth and lobbyist Matt Mika, were also shot.
President Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited Scalise on Wednesday night. During an event at the White House on Thursday, the president said the majority whip is “in some trouble” but “he’s going to be OK, we hope.”
Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen Pence, went to visit Scalise and his family in the hospital Thursday morning, but didn’t get to see Scalise in person due to his ongoing treatment.
