Anne Arundel secures open space funds

Anne Arundel recently received more than $5 million in open space funding to preserve more than 95 acres of parkland as well as sensitive forests and wetlands.

The Board of Public Works awarded funding for the acquisition of:

» 7 wooded acres along Galloway Creek for $1.9 million. This land will be added to the Glendening Nature Preserve in the Jug Bay Wetland Sanctuary, providing a forested buffer filtering runoff into the creek and the Patuxent River.

» 33 acres for a new park in Millersville for $1.7 million. The new park will meet the increased recreational needs resulting from the Base Realignment and Closure process at Fort Meade.

» 26 acres for a new community park in Galesville for $1.4 million. The park contains the historic 1926 baseball field that was home to the Galesville Hot Sox, a sandlot team that sent several players on to professional Negro League teams, such as the Homestead Grays and the Baltimore Black Sox.

» 30 acres along the headwaters of the South River for $704,000. The land along Bacon Ridge Branch, headwaters of the South River, expands the Bacon Ridge Branch Greenway and protects the migratory bird habitat.

“Through these acquisitions and projects, we are expanding Greenways in some of our most environmentally critical areas while preserving the natural beauty of some of the state’s most engaging landscapes,” said board member and Gov. Martin O’Malley in a news release.
