Vermont Gov. Phil Scott became the first Republican governor to publicly support the impeachment inquiry into President Trump.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the inquiry on Tuesday over the controversial conversation Trump had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 25. The president requested the Ukrainian leader investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
”I support getting the facts in that inquiry that’s happening today. So I think these are serious allegations, and we need to make sure that we do the fact-finding and figure out what exactly did happen,” Scott said on Wednesday.
He also said that the inquiry is “appropriate” and that Congress has a “solemn responsibility” to maintain checks and balances, according to the Associated Press.
A whistleblower complaint that was reportedly filed by a CIA officer alleging the president made an improper “promise” with Zelensky was made public on Thursday morning. It also alleged that the White House took additional steps to hide the conversation.
Scott spoke out against Trump when he told four Democratic congresswomen to “go back” to their home countries if they’re unhappy in the United States.
