The actor best known for playing the libertarian Ron Swanson on the TV show “Parks and Recreation” said people can only blame themselves for the less-than-appealing presidential candidates, but he argued the only reasonable choice is Hillary Clinton.
“You know, we have nobody to blame but ourselves for this election, and I think it’s just fascinating,” said actor and comedian Nick Offerman in an Esquire interview published Wednesday.
Typically associated with libertarians who celebrate his TV portrayal of the prototypical all-American man advocating for privatizing government, Offerman said people often confuse him with the character he plays on TV.
The Internet favorite is no fan of Donald Trump, having roasted the Republican presidential candidate during last year’s Webby Awards. He reluctantly said in the Esquire interview he doesn’t see any other option than to vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton, but admitted he thinks she only got this far in the race because of her gender.
“I think, unfortunately, for the democratic process, there’s no logical or sane or moral choice to be made other than voting for Hillary Clinton,” Offerman said. “But I also think that if she were not a woman, we would not be in this boat. I think the election would be over already.”
He suggested that people dislike and mistrust her largely because of her gender before adding he thinks electing the first female president would be a huge accomplishment for the country.
“And that’s another sad thing, that a large reason there’s so much anger and mistrust of her is because people are very reluctant to see the patriarchy topple. I am incredibly excited that the glass ceiling will be shattered,” the actor said.
“And of course we’re going to go kicking and screaming as a nation into that, we would have it no other way. At the end of the day, we’re all a bunch of big babies. But what an exciting accomplishment.”
