Before audio leak, polling has Trump leading in Iowa

Donald Trump maintains a lead over Hillary Clinton in the battleground state of Iowa, according to poll results published Saturday that was conducted before the audio leak of Trump making lewd comments about women in 2005.

Trump received a 4 point advantage over his Democratic rival (43 percent to 39 percent), in the Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll that looked at a four-way race. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson got 6 percent, while the Green Party’s Jill Stein got 2 percent.

Clinton beats Trump in the women vote (46 to 41 percent), while Trump took a much larger chunk of male voters (46 to 32 percent).

A RealClearPolitics average of polls shows Trump maintaining polling advantage over Clinton (41.7 to 28 percent) with the inclusion of the Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll, though it did shrink Trump’s lead down a tick.

It is yet unclear if Friday’s leak of 2005 footage of Trump using vulgar terms to discuss his efforts to seduce a married women will have any impact on voters, though it has already sparked backlash among his political backers, some of whom have retracted their support.

The poll of 800 Iowa adults was conducted by Seelzer & Co. of Des Moines on Oct. 3-6 by Selzr & Co. of Des Moines via landline and cellphone. It has margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. Of those polled, 642 were likely voters. This group had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
