Show more respect for our national anthem Re: “Who knows the words to our national anthem?” Feb. 10

Amen!” I shouted out loud as I read the title of Gregory Kane’s column. For many years before I retired, I was the soloist for the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration awards ceremonies. I sang the national anthem at the opening of the Reagan Building in D.C. Every ITA meeting opened with the Honor Guard presenting the colors and the singing of the national anthem. I always wondered why it was never followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

It is so good to finally read what I believe with all my heart — that Americans need to sing our national anthem correctly, as written, without all those “messages” they try to insert. Schools should require children to sing the anthem each day and say the pledge with conviction. This should also be done at every military event, public gathering and every meeting of Congress.

I am often upset by the disrespect audiences — and especially Olympic athletes — display when the national anthem is being played. Thanks to Mr. Kane for speaking out. It is time someone did.

Using vouchers in private schools is unconstitutional

Re: “No more excuses for opposing school vouchers,” Local Editorial, Feb. 4

One problem with school vouchers is that many of the private schools involved have religious affiliations, and many people do not feel comfortable about public funds going to religious institutions.

They feel that such an arrangement breaches the wall of separation between church and state and is, therefore, a violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Cam Newton would be hot pick for Redskins

The Washington Redskins should pick Auburn University quarterback Cam Newton in the NFL draft. Mr. Newtown has an impressive resume, is 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighs 250 pounds and has lots of charisma.

Just like Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Cam has Hollywood good looks and the sex appeal of a fashion model. He can bring class and animal magnetism to Washington.
