Congressional Black Caucus Chairman G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C., condemned the attack on Baton Rouge police officers Sunday, acknowledging “tensions are high” in America.
Unidentified attackers shot and killed three police officers and wounded at least three others Sunday morning. The shooting comes after a string of incidents involving police officers shooting African-American men, which has sparked nationwide unrest.
Last week, five Dallas police officers were shot and killed and seven others wounded by a gunman at a Black Lives Matter rally responding to the police shootings.
“Tensions are high in our country, but violence does not lead to justice and targeting law enforcement does not bring about solutions,” Butterfield said. “The CBC continues to call for peace and we stand by state and federal officials as they investigate to find the individuals responsible for today’s horrific event.”
