Hopkins employees can get thousands to live nearby

Johns Hopkins is offering employees nearly seven times more money in financial aid to encourage them to live in Baltimore City.

The “Live Near Your Work” program offered up to $2,500 before, but it will now offer up to $17,000 in financial aid to employees looking to buy a home in neighborhoods surrounding the Hopkins hospital or Homewood campus, Hopkins officials announced Monday.

Hopkins, which employs about 45,000 people, hopes that more than 300 will take advantage of the new financial aid and live nearby.

Hopkins will be able to better recruit and retain employees by helping them buy a home near their work, allowing them to cut down on expenses for gasoline at a time when costs are skyrocketing.

But the grants, provided with a $2.5 million donation from the Rouse Company Foundation, will also help strengthen neighborhoods emerging as healthy, safe places to live and bolster those that are already doing well, officials said.
