D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles has sued prominent District landlord Don Peebles, alleging he submitted for reimbursement $1.2 million in improper charges — including donations the businessman made to political campaigns for Councilmen Marion Barry, Michael A. Brown and Jack Evans.
According to an independent audit, the city overpaid Peebles $600,000 in reimbursements between 2007 and 2009. The improper charges were related to property the District leases from Peebles at 2100 Martin Luther King Blvd. SE.
The lawsuit alleges that champagne and valet parking for a Miami fundraiser were also among the improper reimbursements Peebles sought.
The lawsuit does not seek a specific amount, but says Peebles is liable for more than $1.8 million.
A call Wednesday morning to Peebles seeking comment was not immediately returned.
