A new poll out of a major swing state shows that President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden are tied in a theoretical matchup.
The Florida Atlantic University poll released Wednesday asked registered voters in Florida who they would support in matchups between Trump and five of the major Democratic candidates. Trump won against every challenger except for Biden, where the two received 50% support.
When Trump was pitted against Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, he won with 51% of the vote. The president beat out Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kamala Harris of California with 52% and 53% of those surveyed, respectively. In a matchup against South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Trump won 52% support.
During the 2016 presidential election Trump won Florida and its 29 electoral votes by a 1.2% margin.
The poll also showed that the former vice president has a considerable lead for his party’s nomination, with 39% of Democrats supporting Biden in the now 23-person race. Warren and Sanders are tied for second, with 12% support each among Florida Democrats.
Nationally, Biden is also head-and-shoulders above the other Democratic candidates. A RealClearPolitics national average of polls has Biden at 37.6% support.
