President Trump’s job approval rating has stayed the same after a month of more developments related to various Russia probes and multiple hearings on Capitol Hill related to Moscow’s interference in the 2016 election.
A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found Trump’s job approval rating to be 40 percent, up slightly from 39 percent a month earlier.
In the month since this last poll was taken, Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate Russia’s actions in the election and the possibility the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin. During this time, former FBI Director James Comey also alleged Trump tried to push him to limit the bureau’s investigation.
“There is nothing to indicate that weeks of dialogue on Russia have engaged the American public,” Bill McInturff, a Republican pollster who conducted the survey with Democrat Fred Yang, told The Wall Street Journal. “There is a gap between what we [in Washington] are focusing on and what they are focusing on.”
Trump’s popularity is suffering in other areas, according to the poll of 900 adults.
About half of people polled view Trump negatively on qualities of trustworthiness, temperament and knowledge.
But six in 10 people say the economy has improved during Trump’s presidency, and 38 percent give him some credit for it.
Those polled hold negative views of how Trump and his fellow Republicans are handling healthcare.
The House GOP bill to partially repeal and replace Obamacare is viewed as a good idea by 16 percent, down from 23 percent a month ago. Republicans in the Senate released their own healthcare bill on Thursday.
Obamacare, meanwhile, is considered a good idea by 41 percent of individuals polled.
The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll was conducted June 17-20. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.27 percentage points.
