Blaze at tire shop injures District firefighter

A three-alarm fire at a Northeast Washington tire shop burned late into the night Monday, injuring at least one firefighter and throwing black smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles.

D.C. firefighters responded to Jimmy’s Tire Shop on the 1200 block of K Street Northeast at about 1:30 p.m. Five hours later, more than 160 firefighters were still working to contain the blaze inside the three-story structure.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries after slipping, D.C. fire department spokesman Alan Etter said.

Etter said tire fires are difficult to extinguish, sometimes taking months to put out. Fire officials said they hoped to knock out the fire by midnight Monday. – Scott McCabe

Potomac teen dies in crash

A Potomac teenager died Monday morning after he was thrown from a car, Montgomery County police said. Brenton Thomas Everson, 17, of Potomac, was killed around 2:30 a.m. after a 2007 Mazda driven by Richard Andrew McManus, 16, also of Potomac, crashed into curbs, through a fence and utility shed, and into a tree.

Everson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the car, police said.

McManus is at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Mazda was rounding a right curve in Tuckerman Lane when McManus lost control for unknown reasons and crossed over the center line, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call 301-840-2435. – Freeman Klopott

Arsonist sets fire to house for the second time

The second time was the charm for an arsonist who caused an Accokeek house to burn to the ground late Sunday night. In December, the same house on the 16900 block of Livingston Road was damaged by a set fire. Sunday’s fire was the 16th arson in the area since 2004, raising the total damages to $2.5 million. Like other houses burned by the arsonist or group of arsonists, the house Sunday night was under construction. The loss is estimated at $350,000.

Anyone with information is asked to call 301-77-ARSON (772-7766).
