McDonnell: Majority of state interstates now have 70 mph speed limits

The Virginia State Department of Transportation has completed installation of 70 mph speed limit signs more than a month ahead of schedule, Gov. Bob McDonnell’s office announced Friday.

Some 61 percent of the state’s interstates have the 70 mph limits.

Legislation allowing higher speed limits took effect July 1, and the state Department of Transportation studied nearly 800 miles of highways to prep for the change with input from engineers and law enforcement.
