Bernie Sanders “absolutely” agrees with the father of a Muslim soldier killed in Iraq who at the Democratic National Convention slammed GOP nominee for not understanding the U.S. Constitution.
In a video interview Friday evening from Burlington, Vt., with HBO’s Bill Maher, the Vermont senator said that coming out of the Democratic convention in Philadelphia there is a need to stop “the most dangerous presidential candidate in the modern history of this country.”
After criticizing Trump for his views on climate change, tax breaks for the “top 1 percent” and the Birther movement, Sanders gave a shoutout to Khizr Khan, who flanked by his wife Thursday evening, spoke about his son who was killed by a car bomb in Iraq in 2004.
“I think that Muslim father of the young man who died in Iraq was absolutely right: that somebody like Trump does not understand the Constitution of the United States,” Sanders said.
“I think you see many Republicans who believe that as well,” he added.
In his speech, Khan condemned Trump for running a campaign that has consistently smeared Muslims, as well as other minorities, including a proposed ban on all Muslims entering the U.S. At one point, while waving around his own copy of the Constitution, Khan questioned whether Trump has ever read the document.
“Let me ask you: have you even read the United States constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy,” Khan said. “In this document, look for the words ‘liberty’ and ‘equal protection of law.'”
Sanders told Maher that while it is “no secret” that he has disagreements with his Democratic primary challenger and now nominee, Hillary Clinton, he plans to work with her as president to “progressively as she can” adhere to “maintaining the very strong Democratic-progressive platform that we passed together.”
