Public transit schedules reduced for Christmas

Area residents planning to use public transportation for Christmas Day trips may have to adjust their schedules or find alternate ways of reaching their destination due to the transit system’s reduced schedules.

Metrorail will operate on a Sunday schedule on Christmas Day, meaning trains will run from 7 a.m. to midnight. Parking at all Metro stations will be free.

Metro’s buses will also operate on a Sunday schedule, but MetroAccess, which serves the elderly and disabled, will be on a weekday schedule and operate from 5:30 a.m. to midnight. Sunday schedules call for buses to run less frequently than during the regular work week, so passengers may have to wait longer at their stops. Exact times vary by route.

Metro is encouraging passengers to use the agency’s trip planner on www.metroopensdoors.com to chart their journeys. The planner contains holiday schedule information for Metro and other regional transit companies.

Most other transit agencies in the area are taking Christmas Day off, though Fairfax County’s Connector bus service will run a Sunday schedule, as will the Arlington Transit bus service.
