Trump: Why aren’t ‘deep state’ authorities probing Clinton emails?

President Trump questioned why “deep state” authorities are not investigating how the public was misled concerning Hillary Clinton’s emails following remarks from former Intelligence Community Inspector General Charles McCullough on Fox News.

“Charles McCullough, the respected fmr Intel Comm Inspector General, said public was misled on Crooked Hillary Emails. ‘Emails endangered National Security.’ Why aren’t our deep State authorities looking at this? Rigged & corrupt? @TuckerCarlson @seanhannity,” Trump tweeted Tuesday night.

The “deep state” is a reference to a conspiracy theory about a behind-the-scenes bureaucracy controlling American politics.

McCullough, who was responsible for overseeing the 17 U.S. intelligence agencies, has appeared on Fox News in recent days and asserted that there was an effort by the Obama administration and the Clinton campaign to mislead the public about Clinton’s emails from her unauthorized server used during her time as secretary of state.

McCullough was one of a few officials to view the 22 emails considered so sensitive they should not be released for any reason and said he supported the decision to withhold the emails over national security concerns.

The FBI opted last year not to pursue criminal charges against Clinton for how she managed classified materials as secretary of state, even as Trump repeatedly called for Clinton’s prosecution during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has faced pressure recently from Republicans to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate how the email case was managed.
