“We made our fair share of mistakes,” Minority Leader John Boehner said this morning of the last time the GOP had a majority in Congress. “We get it, and this is why, when we outline in here, our Pledge to America, I can tell you, we are very serious about implementing our pledge.”
Rep. Peter Roskam of Illinois said that the legislative reforms shouldn’t be discounted. He argued that Americans turned on the Democrats “when they realized they [Democrats] weren’t reading the bill.”
“The Democratic majority poked the public in the eye,” Roskam added. “People voted for the cool guy [in 2008]. They didn’t vote to triple the debt.”
Rep. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia remarked that the entire caucus was united behind the document: “We have cohesion. Kevin McCarthy and Peter Roskam really worked to include every person in the committee. That has led to a great deal of unity.”
