Pete Buttigieg shared a photo of himself and his husband Chasten, describing the pair as a “first family.”
The South Bend, Indiana, mayor posted the snapshot, which features the spouses walking hand-in-hand and smiling at one another, to his Instagram account on Sunday along with the caption, “A first family.”
Earlier this year, the couple was featured on the cover of Time magazine with the title “First Family” emblazoned across the image. At the time, Buttigieg, 37, used his appearance on the cover as a message of hope to Americans across the country.
“If you’re ever wondering if this is a season to be hopeful, with dark things happening in Washington, strange times come over the land, I would refer you to the cover of Time magazine,” he said in May. “You can see a picture of a guy and his husband and the words ‘First Family.'”

While Chasten, 30, has been branded the 2020 Democrat’s “secret weapon” on the campaign trail, Buttigieg has also received criticism from his own brother-in-law, pastor Rhyan Glezman, who accused the candidate of lying about his family for political gain soon after the Time magazine article was published.
Earlier this month, Glezman, who serves a church in small-town Michigan, called Buttigieg a “modern-day Pharisee” while speaking with the Washington Examiner after the mayor appeared to appeal to the Bible to justify late-term abortion. He added, however, “I can love someone who disagrees with me. I love my brother, I love Pete, I love all people, but that doesn’t mean that I’m going to change my beliefs.”
Buttigieg currently sits in fourth place in the Democratic presidential primary, polling at 5.3% according to Real Clear Politics.
