Severe thunderstorm warning issued for D.C. area

Outgoing flights are on hold at all three major airports in the Washington area as severe weather forces delays at airports along the Eastern seaboard.

The Federal Aviation Administration said that officials have ordered ground stops at all three D.C.-area airports, meaning planes already in the air can land but those on the ground are not permitted to take off. Authorities are also limiting air traffic in Boston, New York and Philadelphia.

The delays came as a line of thunderstorms moved south from Pennsylvania toward the District.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Washington area until 5 p.m.

“A severe thunderstorm was detected near Chevy Chase,” forecasters wrote. “This storm is capable of producing hail up to the size of quarters and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.”

The warning area includes the District and Anne Arundel, Arlington, Fairfax, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, along with Falls Church.

Forecasters earlier issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the D.C. area until 9 p.m.
