Maryland State Police say a 2-month old baby has died from injuries suffered in a crash that also killed a man and closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 83 north of Baltimore, snarling morning commuter traffic.

The Baltimore County Fire Department said five other people were critically injured. The patients were taken to Shock Trauma and Sinai Hospital.

The accident occurred early today near Shawan Road in Hunt Valley.

State police spokesman Sgt. Arthur Betts told a local television station that the crash happened after a car struck a guardrail and became disabled on the highway. Betts says the dead man was removing the infant from the car when the car was struck by a second vehicle. The man died at the scene and the infant died at Sinai.

The northbound lanes of the highway remained closed several hours after the accident.
